Do Something Creative

Show your creativity to your children and they will be inspired to seek out their own.

This morning my two and a half year old walked into my studio and said, “Mommy painted that.” He then described what he saw in the painting on the easel. Through conversations with friends over the past year, I have come to understand that a mother's creativity nurtures her children's creativity. By giving ourselves the time and space to exercise our artistic abilities, we grant our children permission to experiment with art. Not only are we inspiring them to paint, draw, sing, dance or write, but we are also teaching them how to acknowledge and communicate their thoughts and feelings.

Quick Tip:
Pull out the paints and brushes. Put on the smock. Turn on the music. And paint with your kids.

Definition:
Creativity is thinking of new ideas; dreaming of what could be.

Read:
Apt. 3
by Ezra Jack Keats

Talk:
1. Who do Sam and Ben find in Apt. 3?
2. How does Sam feel when he listens to the man play the harmonica?
3. Your Big World: What is your favorite type of music? Why? How does it make you feel?

Act:
Listen to various types of music - pop, jazz, rock, classical. Discuss how each piece makes you feel.
